Classed Choropleth map - Per pupil expenditure on public education in North Carolina

Classed choropleth maps differ from unclassed choropleth maps in that there is not an unlimited amount of intervals, and the intervals are clearly defined.  This map of North Carolina is showing expenditures per pupil for public education between the years of 1994 and 1995 using a single-hue graded series.  Darker shades represent a larger expenditure, and lighter shades represent smaller expenditures – the five classes are on the left in a legend.  It seems that the largest expenditures were in the northeast and the west of the state.
