This is a continuously variable or continuously graded
proportional circle map, which means that there are many different sizes for
the circles, which – in this case – represent the number of motor vehicle
deaths in California. From the
map, one can tell that there are more isolated areas with higher numbers of
motor vehicle deaths in the southern part of California (these are probably
major cities), and many more areas with slightly smaller numbers of motor
vehicle deaths along the west coast towards the center of the state. A note about the car symbols: these may be useful if the map is used in a less-scientific setting, to give people a better visual. However, the abstract shape of a circle allows a person to better and more accurately estimate the area and the proportions, so it is better to use circle in a scientific setting.
