This population profile has a typical pyramid shape. This particular profile is comparing
the population of Galashiels, Scotland, in 1881 (dark blue) to the population
30 years earlier in 1851 (light blue).
We can see that overall the population increased, keeping its pyramid
shape for the most part (typical for growing populations), with an especially
large growth in the age range of 20-24.
From today’s perspective, it is alarming to see the birth rate equal the
death rate of young people as it is here, but it is not so surprising when one
considers that this data is from the 19th century!
